Unbearable Lightness by Portia DeRossi - Review

Description

"I didn't decide to become anorexic. It snuck up on me disguised as a healthy diet, a professional attitude. Being as thin as possible was a way to make the job of being an actress easier . . ."

Portia de Rossi weighed only 82 pounds when she collapsed on the set of the Hollywood film in which she was playing her first leading role. This should have been the culmination of all her years of hard work—first as a child model in Australia, then as a cast member of one of the hottest shows on American television. On the outside she was thin and blond, glamorous and successful. On the inside, she was literally dying.

In this searing, unflinchingly honest book, Portia de Rossi captures the complex emotional truth of what it is like when food, weight, and body image take priority over every other human impulse or action. She recounts the elaborate rituals around eating that came to dominate hours of every day, from keeping her daily calorie intake below 300 to eating precisely measured amounts of food out of specific bowls and only with certain utensils. When this wasn't enough, she resorted to purging and compulsive physical exercise, driving her body and spirit to the breaking point.

Even as she rose to fame as a cast member of the hit television shows Ally McBeal and Arrested Development, Portia alternately starved herself and binged, all the while terrified that the truth of her sexuality would be exposed in the tabloids. She reveals the heartache and fear that accompany a life lived in the closet, a sense of isolation that was only magnified by her unrelenting desire to be ever thinner. With the storytelling skills of a great novelist and the eye for detail of a poet, Portia makes transparent as never before the behaviors and emotions of someone living with an eating disorder.

From her lowest point, Portia began the painful climb back to a life of health and honesty, falling in love with and eventually marrying Ellen DeGeneres, and emerging as an outspoken and articulate advocate for gay rights and women's health issues.

In this remarkable and beautifully written work, Portia shines a bright light on a dark subject. A crucial book for all those who might sometimes feel at war with themselves or their bodies, Unbearable Lightness is a story that inspires hope and nourishes the spirit.

What I Can Tell You:
Wow! I don't know of a more honest book. Portia is brutally candid and this book had me from the first page. I saw this at the library and read it in 3 days in the middle of a million things going on.

As I read this book, I wondered how many woman are in the same place Portia was. The calculating, the weighing, the stress, the anxiety, the fear. Portia sheds light on how much work it takes to be anorexic and how it affects the people around you.

A seemingly strong woman, with a blossoming career who would have known the nightmare she was living. If nothing else, this book will enforce the fact that anorexia is a disease. It is not something an individual has control over. It is not something someone steps into lightly. It is a sickness often stems from a deeper problem. Self doubt, self loathing, and insecurities manifest into something that completely overtakes an individual without them even knowing it.

My heart goes out to Portia who was unwavering in her honesty as she bears her soul for all to see. She is a beautiful person who wrote a book that she be a must read for therapists and anyone who has ever loved/loves someone suffering from this disease.

A must read.

Thanksgiving Dinner At My House?

Is your dining room table big enough to host Thanksgiving?

Mine is not!
Mine is not even big enough for a small kid gathering. We have to eat in shifts if everyone wants to eat.

It is my dream to one day host a spectacular dinner with all my family instead of at my In-Laws house every year.

Dining Room Direct is one of CSN's stores. Now, if you haven't heard of CSN yet let me tell ya, there is nothing you can't find. CSN is made up of 200+ stores selling everything from lamps to beds to pet supplies to shoes and everything in between.

My dream dining room table would have 8 or more seat and be comfortable enough where people wouldn't be rushing to leave their seat. A place where family and friends will chat into the wee hours of the morning. A place like my grandmother's dinning room table. There was enough room for all of us 15 when we were all together. Love the idea but I doubt I could fit that kind of table in my dining room.

Ahhh to dream.

So She Is After All!

I thought maybe she was just chunking up. Mariah has finally confirmed that Yes, she is pregnant. Well, good for her.

Could Jake Gyllenhaal See Himself In A Taylor Swift Song?

So the rumor mill is talking about Jake and Taylor. Umm...don't know how I feel about this or even if I  feel anything. I tend to not believe a lot of what I read. Could she be doing a song for a movie he is in? Could he be starring in a video of hers? Maybe they have the same agent? Maybe she is in a movie he is in. The point is this, who knows????

9 years difference really isn't that big of a deal so stop sweatin' people.

I am Soooooo Happy About This!

Howard K. Stern, not to be confused with Howard Stern (King of All Media) has been found guilty in the death of Anna Nicole Smith.

He wants to clarify, he was not found guilty of her death.

"In other words, everything related to the appropriateness of the medication, I was acquitted of," Stern said in a brief statement to the press after court.

"What the jury did find me guilty of," he said, "were two conspiracy counts limited exclusively to my name being used on medication for Anna. Now, this was done to protect Anna Nicole's privacy and it was nothing more than that.

I reviewed Blonde Ambition in 2008 which goes into detail about Anna's death. In my eyes, he never had Anna's best interest at heart.

RIP Anna.

Katy Perry Can't Play With Elmo

By now you have probably heard that Sesame Street pulled an episode of Elmo and Katy Perry.

I am a big Katy fan but honestly, what were they thinking? Even Sesame Street isn't safe TV for babies and toddlers anymore.

Here's the video, what do you think?

Andy Whitffield Not Returning To Spartacus

Hollywood Reporter press release from Starz

Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.

"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus‚ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."

No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."

Starz still plans to air the prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" in January 2011. Entitled "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.

Eye Candy - September

Chotskies Eye Candy Feature is really one of my favorites and unfortunately and regrettably, I only did it three times this year.

So, without further ado, September's eye candy candidate: Jason Momoa

Jason was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 1, 1979. Born, Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa, the 6’4” actor was discovered by Takeo, an international designer, and he started a modeling career. He is known for his role as Jason Ioane in the popular series Baywatch.

Jason is the baby daddy of Lisa Bonet's babies. Man, that girl makes babies with hot guys. Jason was on Baywatch in 1989.

He was on a show called North Shore, and then on Stargate Atlantis and now will be starring as Conan in 2011.

Come on, this guy is hot!
Here he is as Conan
Conan will be released to theaters in 2011

Brenda and Sonny Reuite on GH

Is there any readers out there that have been watching GH for the past 32 years. It is crazy to think I am watching a show older than some of my friends.

I got into General Hospital when I was 12 years old. My friend Shantel used to run from the bus to catch the last 40 minutes of the show. We knew not to bother her during that time. Soon enough, I was watching right along with her.

For the past three weeks the Brenda/Sonny build up as been escalating. Friday, they were in the same place at the same time. A gun is heard, Sonny and Brenda look up, eyes meet and they smile. I assume no longer worried about the gun shot. After everything these two have been through with shoot outs. You would think they would be hiding under a table.

Could Murphy have been shot? Does Brenda even care?

Is anyone else as excited about the Brenda dynamic and how it will play out in the Jax, Carly relationship, Jason, Sam relationship or Sonny and all his Port Charles woman. It is odd to think that Sonny has kids old enough to date Brenda at this point. Weird! When she left last time did he even have kids?

Hate that I am in a MUST see mode with GH at the moment especially with the kids back in school which means I won't get home until 3:45, leaving only about 8 minutes of the show left over.

Kris Kristopherson Flashback - A Star Is Born

Today was the perfect day to spend a few hours in front of Netflix.

Teach was downstairs working in the garage. Handsome was playing XBox and Goddess was playing with her dollhouse. Perfect time to catch a "me" movie. Not one I have to watch because of the kids or the husband, but one I WANT to see.

I am a child of the 70's and 1976 was the movie that changed what I found hot! It had been Shawn Cassidy and Donny Osmond until the day I saw A Star Is Born. Just 10 years old and after seeing Kris Kristopherson in I was hooked. The hair, the eyes, the clothes, I was smitten.

Was it just me or did anyone else have the hots for Kris?

He was like what I pictured Jesus Christ would look like in 70's clothing.

My sisters and I loved the soundtrack and listened as often as possible. We loved Barbara Streisand as much as our parents and knew every song. When I am cleaning the house or doing dishes I throw in my rendition of Queen Bee. Damn I love this song!

The black, black widow is sittin' in the middle of the web,
it's the fly she seeks.
You may be her lover but you never will recover, 'cause
she ain't had a bite for weeks.
You think your the same, 'cause you got the same name,
but the widow has a mobile home.
Remember what I told you, she got eight arms to hold you,
and she's never gonna let you roam.
She'll tuck into bed and truck on your head, then she'll
wrap you as a midnight snack.
So if you see a spider, don't you sidle up beside her
Why'd you think the widow's wearin' black?

Queen bee, baby
Pray that you may be left on your own, uh huh
Nothin' she'll give you, gonna outlive you, uh, uh, uh
But the queen bee's never gonna be alone. Uh huh.
Long before Atlantis there has been a praying mantis and
you knows why he's on his knees.
He may have religion but he's just a sittin' pigeon if a
woman even starts to tease.
He won't even quibble if she has a little nibble on his neck,
what a way to go.
And now you done and torn it! You been messin' with a
hornet, she's a blue-blooded wasp, you know.
And just as you do it, she'll inject you with a fluid that you
ain't even got but none.
You're the meat on the plate, not even first rate, she's
gonna feed you to her seventh son.

Just like the Queen Bee, baby
Pray that you may be left on your own,
Nothin' she'll give you, gonna outlive you, uh, uh, uh
But the queen bee's never gonna be alone. Uh huh. Uh huh.

So, in conclusion, it's an optical illusion, if you think that
we're the weaker race.
Men got the muscle, but the ladies got the hustle, and the
truth is staring in your face.
The mother bear stalks, and the queen of the hawks, is the
one who brings home the bread.
The lion that is regal, and the bald headed eagle, need a
woman just to keep them fed.
But come the evenin', we're like Adam and his Eve, inside
the garden. Hear the serpent's sound?
It's so frustratin', when you're really into matin', and there
ain't a lovin' man around.

Whoever wrote this story
(it's so frustratin', when you're really
into matin', and there ain't a lovin' man around)
Throw out the glory
(it's so frustratin', when you're really
into matin', and there ain't a lovin' man around)
Bring in the men (give me them and I'll swing)
Write me a sequel
Give me an equal, oh, oh, oh
And I'll give that man
I said I'm give that lovin' man
I said I'm gonna give that lovin' man
I'm gonna give him that lovin' sting! Zap!

If you have not seen A Star is Born (not the original with Judy Garland), and you like Barbara and musicals. Give is a go.

John Norman Howard (Kris) is a reckless big time rock n' roller. His drinking and antics are getting the better of him and his career is suffering. He meets Esther one night when he drunkingly walks into a club where she and her back up singers are doing their thing. After creating drama she sneaks him out the back door.  They fall in love. He thinks she has real talent and gets her on stage during one of his shows and applauds as the audience and press love her. Her career is taking off just as his is crashing. She wants him on the road with her, her people want him to hang back and let her fly. She is special and he knows it.  He takes matters into his own hands to make sure that her career stays strong. The ending always has me sobbing.  Sometimes love just isn't enough.

Streisand is her typical 70's great! Kristopherson gives an amazing performance as a suffering artist. Great movie!  Golden Globes for both as best actor and actress and best motion picture musical.

The fire of Barbra Streisand. The magnetism of Kris Kristofferson. The reckless world of big-time rock 'n' roll. All three bring a new passion and timeliness to A Star Is Born, one of the screen's classic love stories (previously filmed in 1937 and 1954) and winner of five Golden GlobeO Awards, including Best Picture, Actress and Actor (Musical/Comedy). Paul Williams, Kenny Loggins, Leon Russell and others worked with Streisand on one of the most popular song scores ever, topped by the Streisand/Williams Evergreen winning the Academy AwardO and Golden GlobeO Award as 1976's Best Original Song. Their teamwork resulted in a box-office triumph as well as "a considerable achievement" (Clive Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical).

Remember Me - Amateur Movie Review

In the summer of 2001, New York college student Tyler (Robert Pattinson, The Twilight Saga) is still feeling lost from the tragedy that has strained his relationship with his father when he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin, TV’s “Lost”), a girl who understands his pain. The last thing Tyler’s looking for is love, but through their passionate relationship, he finds new possibilities for happiness. It’s an unforgettable story about the power of the heart, the strength of family, and the importance of treasuring every day of one’s life.

What I Can Tell You:

Rob Pattinson was in this movie and I was going to see it regardless of anything. I wanted to see if he could be someone other than Edward for me. The movie was very well done. It is a story of redemption, love, loss, and past pain.

I cried about four times during this movie. The movie has 3 different storylines. Tyler and his family, Tyler and Ally and Ally and her Father.

I think that if you are thinking this is a "Twilight fan" movie you are very mistaken. It is worth a watch. You will feel for the characters. It is a very deep, moving story of two families who have gone through loss and are dealing with it the best way they can. Each of them in their own way.

My favorite relationship is of Tyler and his sister Caroline. Tyler is a big brother, protector, father figure in Caroline's life while she appreciates him and acknowledges his faults but respects him.

Without giving away the ending, the last 10 minutes are done wonderfully. Edited without shoving the inevitable down our throats to make old wounds rip open to bleed again.  In the end, we all just want to be remembered.

Great movie.

Shutter Island - Review

We recently got Netflix. It is awesome.

Last night we watched Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio
World War II soldier-turned-U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) investigates the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane, but his efforts are compromised by his own troubling visions and by Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley). Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer and Max von Sydow co-star in director Martin Scorsese's plot twist-filled psychological thriller set on a Massachusetts island in 1954.
Cast:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, Max von Sydow, Emily Mortimer, Jackie Earle Haley, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch
Director:
Martin Scorsese

Why You Should See This Movie: Leo DiCaprio and the supporting cast!

What I Can Tell You:
This isn't one of those movies you can put on and do things. You need to dedicate 2 hours and 18 minutes to it! Based on the book Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane.

I thought the movie was awesome. Leo is fantastic.Mark Ruffalo who I always appreciated is a great wing man.

The Year, 1954. Leo plays Teddy Daniels, a US marshal who is sent to Shutter Island (a hospital/prison for the criminally insane) with his new partner Chuck to investigate the disappearance of a patient Rachel Solando.

Teddy has flashbacks and dreams of his wife and the war that that haunt him both while asleep and awake.

About an hour in I turned to my husband and said I got it figured out. I did! I was right. But, the last 5 minutes of the movie had me scratching my head. It was the one line where Leo/Teddy says, "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man?"

Now that the ending has been presented to me, there are many clues through the movie that nicely set up the twist. I really want to watch it again to see the twists unfold and see more than I saw the first time.

Since my reviews whether sponsored or otherwise are 100% honest, I have to admit there was about 20 minutes of the movie that I had to watch through my closed hand. It wasn't a consecutive 20 mins but a total of, where I couldn't "see" the images on the screen. Anything to do with children "not breathing" is really hard for me. I refuse to have these images imprinted on my brain so I mostly just ask my husband if it is OK to look.

Michelle Williams was awesome and disturbing at the same time.

Some memorable quotes that sat with me later were:

Chuck Aule: You okay boss?
Teddy Daniels: Yeah fine, I just ah, I just can't, can't stomach the water.

Warden: We wage war, we burn sacrifices we pillage and plunder and treat at the flesh of our brothers and why? Because God gave us violence to wage in his honor.
Teddy Daniels: I thought God gave us moral orders.
Warden: There is no moral orders as pure as this storm. There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?

Dolores Chanal: Set me free.

I think this movie is a 5 out of 5 stars. Great thriller, mystery. Very, very well done.

Breaking Dawn Will Have Sex Scene!

Woot!

Well anyway, hopefully it will be more than is in the book.

According to Melissa Rosenberg, the Twilight Saga screen writer; Breaking Dawn may very well be the most graphic of the bunch.

“I don’t think we’re planning to shy away from anything,” she told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "I think the birth should be as horrifying as it is in the novel. The sex scenes should be as scintillating as they are in the novel, as erotic as they are in the novel. All of it, I think we should see all of it.”

The scribe also teased a few details about where she plans to split the two films, “I can tell you that the break between the two movies will be somewhere around from her transition from a human, pregnant, newly-wed, to her being a vampire and a parent. Somewhere right in there we’ll find the break.” She jokes, “Where specifically? I’m not sure or I’m just not saying.”

What about Bella and Edward’s nuptials? Will it live up to fan’s expectations? According to Rosenberg, “We want it to be just a beautiful, lush, epic wedding. And I think it will be.”

The movie will be rated PG-13 so I can't imagine we will be seeing anything remotely relating to honeymoon sex.  Oh well, it looks like a kiss, feathers and a belly. We will have to imagine it all just like the book.

My Eclipse Review - The Twilight Saga - Amateur Movie Review

This past weekend, Clary and I headed out at the very last minute to see Eclipse. We strolled off hand in hand, giddy with expectation and excitement. It was one of our favorite books of the series and we were extremely READY to see it.

Both of us are early birds so we had at least 20 minutes to kill before the movie started. The theatre was ours for the first 15 minutes than others started coming in. The first was a chick by herself. The next a couple. Clary couldn't control herself and said something like, "hooray a guy." He said, "I was dragged". The next group were 4 women in their 40's. They sat right in front of us and like the die hard fans we are, (nothing was going to stop us from hearing every word in the movie which is why we waited 2 weeks to see the movie. We wanted NO NOISE.) we moved! Oh, yes, took our asses and snacks and moved 5 rows away from the hen house.

Another couple came in, Clary started singing "You are not alone!" Then another couple right before the movie started.

We held hands waiting for the movie to start. We do not speak during movies even when home. All talking commences after the movie. You would think we hated each other or at least didn't know each other.

So, with that huge unnecessary build up, the movie starts.

What I Can Tell You:
  • Bella is still unexcited about absolutely everything
  • The movie felt rushed
  • Edward is hot but hardly seen
  • It should be illegal for Jacob Black to wear a shirt ever
  • It should be illegal for any of us over 35 to lust after 18 year old Taylor Lautner
  • Charlie is hardly seen
  • There is way too much story for the 2 hour, 4 minute movie.
  • Back stories, new characters, missing dialogue and more.
  • If I didn't know the story, I would have been very confused.
  • The wolf pack look like they need some sandwiches. They are all skinny
  • It does not appear that Kristen Stewart is having a relationship with either of these guys outside the movie. The kisses were total movie kisses.
  • Rob and Kristen share some awkward hugs and kisses.
  • There was so much missing dialogue and some of it was changed or said by different characters.
  • I loved it regardless of all the short comings. Some things just don't translate well to the screen. I am happy to see it come to life and can't wait for Breaking Dawn.
  • The scenes with the wolfs are so cool.
  • We couldn't stop talking about the change of Victoria. Bryce as Victoria's role is so small, why did they find the need to change her from Rachelle?
  • Jacob is so much funnier in the book
  • Jasper is hotter this time around
  • I am still Team Edward
  • We would have loved to see more scenes of the Wolfs and vampire practice fighting
  • We smiled during the Jacob/Edward/Bella Scenes

I am not sure if they used the Barbie dolls or the real actors for this shot but it totally looks like a bunch of Barbies to me.
Bree is so cute!
If I had two hot, devoted, would die for me guys in love with me, I would not be wearing this face.

Just saying!

Wait......I think I see a sorta smile here.  I stand corrected.

If you read the books, don't expect to love the movie. Go in excited for your beloved book to come to life, then go back and read the books. That is what I am doing.

However, I will be snatching up Eclipse on DVD as soon as I can!

True Blood Knows How To Cast The Hot Guys!

First we had hot Eric but after last week I am asking, "Eric who?"

Ok, I love me some Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård Alexander as Eric is hot, sexy, and devilish. He was my first Eye Candy of 2010.

But, in steps werewolf Joe Manganiello, aka Alcide! Oh my. I have always had a thing for the lumberjack look and Joe carries it well.
Yummy!

Check him out walking in LA.
At 6'5" he is a tall glass of water just like Alex and since I am usually not attracted to light guys, I have to say, I am really looking forward to more of Joe on screen. Grrr....

One of the benefits of not having read past the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series (True Blood) is that I have no idea what this characters arc is. I don't know how he plays into the story. The only thing I do know is that his character is in a big part of the books especially book 10. Since we are only on Season 3 I believe this is a good thing. Means loads of sexy Joe on the screen. I just hate that I have to wait 7 days to see him again!

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE - Clip "Bedroom"

Is Everyone As Excited As Me?

I am so excited about Eclipse. It was my favorite book in the series and haven't had time to catch up on any of the buzz in recent weeks.

Lately the news has been covering people waiting on line since Sunday for the premiere. I don't think that makes you a bigger fan than me, I think that makes you crazy.

Check out the hotness surrounding the three big stars of the movie. Who wouldn't want to be flanked by these two young men?

The Book Of Eli - Amateur Movie Review

In a post-apocalyptic world, a lone hero (Washington) guards the Book of Eli, which provides knowledge that could redeem society. The despot of a small, makeshift town (Oldman) plans to take possession of the book.
What I Can Tell You: My husband and I watched this last weekend. While I really liked the movie, my husband really didn't care for it. He is a huge Denzel Washington fan (his favorite actor) but really thought the movie wasn't that good. I on the other hand. Loved it!

It is different and at the end we both discussed something we didn't realize until the very end. The movie is slow, quiet but strong.  I loved Gary Oldman!

I also loved Mila Kunis. It was great seeing her in something different than Forgetting Sarah Marshall or Extract and That 70's Show. She looked like Angelina Jolie as Lara Craft. Who knew she could be an action star? Loved it.

Check out her total hotness!
The Book of Eli was a great movie and I highly recommend it.
